Welcome to the Sustainability at Williams Blog

In January of 2007, Williams College committed to a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 10% below 1990-1991 levels by 2020, in addition to adopting environmental sustainability in general as an institutional priority. Since that time, diverse departments, students groups and individuals have been working on making those goals a reality, and much more work remains to be done. Even though Williams often feels like a small community, we often don’t hear much about what’s happening outside of our own part of the campus. This blog will be used to communicate about Williams’ ongoing efforts to increase its environmental sustainability and decrease its greenhouse gas emissions. Future topics will include:

  1. Report of greenhouse gas emissions for fiscal year 2007
  2. A discussion of how Williams’ greenhouse gas emissions are calculated
  3. Updates on current building projects from a sustainability perspective
  4. Practical information to help the campus community recycle, conserve energy, and save water.
  5. Reports on projects undertaken by Facilities and other departments and groups

We hope that this blog will help to make some of the “invisible” things that the college is doing to increase sustainability more visible. We welcome suggestions for future topics, and we look forward to inviting guest writers in the future.
