On Friday, May 14, Dining Services hosted a beautiful spring cook out for the Williams community. This zero waste event is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of Williams College Dining Services staff. Over the past several years, they have been amassing a collection of reusable dishware and cups so that they can reduce the amount of trash typically generated at ‘out of the kitchen’ sites. Their approach to catering services is commendable and sets a standard for all caterers at Williams and elsewhere.
Students participate by helping make signs and information available about the featured local foods. Dining staff fill cups with lemonade and iced teas rather than offering sodas in disposable plastic bottles. Another group of staff, cheerfully greet picnic participants as they clear the scraps from their plates. Even though, this year was housed inside due to threat of an on-coming storm – they managed to create a welcoming homey atmosphere through their decorations of fresh green chives and lack of disposables.
The food served was sourced as locally as possible Equinox Farm greens, High Lawn farm dairy products, Ioka Valley Farm beef. Thank you Dining Services for your efforts to make Williams sustainable.
